Virtual Exhibit - Stitched in Red, White, and Blue

Upcoming Exhibit
Start Date:
September 1, 2026
End Date:
December 20, 2026

As we celebrate 250 years of American history, we turn to three colors that have come to symbolize a nation. Red, white, and blue have long appeared in quilts made for everyday use, special occasions, and moments of remembrance. Bold and eye-catching, these colors can signal celebration, remembrance, pride, and unity. For quiltmakers throughout history, they were more than just fabric choices. They were a way to express identity and mark important moments in time.

This virtual exhibition showcases historic red, white, and blue quilts from the Virginia Quilt Museum’s collection. From radiant star patterns to intricate pieced blocks and delicate appliqué, each quilt reflects the creativity and skill of its maker. Some designs make a strong patriotic statement. Others quietly weave these colors into timeless patterns.

Together, these quilts remind us that history is not only written in books; it is stitched into fabric, passed down through generations, and shared in our homes.
