In fall 2023, the Virginia Quilt Museum invited quilters to create 20” x 20” quilts depicting a person, place, idea, or event from Virginia or West Virginia history. 136 quilters nationwide answered the call, creating 260 quilts; 80 were selected for this traveling exhibition. These quilts commemorate America’s 250th anniversary, organized into four themes: Power of Place, Unfinished Revolutions, We the People, and Virginia Experiments. From the earliest Indigenous tribes, to settlers seeking freedom and opportunity, to enslaved Africans whose labor built the state’s economy, to the diverse voices of today, Virginia's history is a quilt stitched of many threads.
