Security Blanket

Upcoming Exhibit
Start Date:
May 30, 2026
End Date:
June 26, 2026

This project was conceived in June of 2024. Since then, the issues addressed in the quilt have faced unprecedented attacks. All the more reason to encourage public discussion of the real needs of women and families. Women need access to safe, legal, affordable abortion, but abortion is just a single thread in a larger fabric. To illuminate that fabric, we invited 30 artists and quilters to collaborate on an artwork modeled on a baby quilt. The quilt demonstrates how abortion rights are nestled within a range of needs which a just society would publicly fund, and which would benefit society as a whole.

Each artist/quilter chose an issue of concern starting with a particular letter of the alphabet and then designed a block illustrating that issue. As a whole, the quilt offers an ABC guide to a more just and equitable society.

Our goal is to spark discussion by exhibiting the quilt widely in public spaces such as libraries, community centers, healthcare facilities and schools as well as in galleries. We invite other groups of artists to create Security Blankets to exhibit in their own communities to build the movement for human rights and justice.
