From Albums to Abstract: The Evolution of Quilting Styles in the United States - Selections from the VQM Education Collection

From the intricacies of broderie perse quilts in the last 18th and early 19th centuries to the postage stamp quilts popular in the early 20th century to the use of blank space in modern quilts, quilting has changed and evolved over the past 250 years in the United States. While quilting predates the founding of the United States by centuries, the evolution of quilting styles in the US is distinct and a beautiful story. From chintz applique of the late 18th century through modern art quilts of the present day, this exhibition will explore some of the most popular styles and techniques of quilting over the past 250 years. Enjoy these 12 distinct and breathtaking quilts from the Virginia Quilt Museum while thinking about what your favorite style of quilting is.
