AQSG 19th Century Blues brings together 25 study quilts created by members of the American Quilt Study Group, each inspired by a historic quilt from the 19th century. Drawing on quilts held in museum, historical society, and private collections, participating quiltmakers studied these historic examples and created their own interpretations of the exhibit’s theme.
Each study quilt offers a contemporary response to an historic original, providing an opportunity to consider how quilters engage with, interpret, and learn from quilts of the past. Together, the 25 works highlight the ongoing practice of quilt study and the many ways historic quilts can inspire new work.
Discover how today’s quiltmakers look to the past for inspiration, creating new works from the study of historic quilts.
