First Fridays of the Valley - Community Crazy Quilt Copy

April 1, 2022

Free admission for First Fridays from 5:00 - 7:00 pm.

The Virginia Quilt Museum is celebrating crazy quilts throughout 2022 with the making of a community crazy quilt.

Crazy quilts use irregularly shaped pieces of fabric pieced together. The seams and patches are often decorated with elaborate embellishments, like beads, paint, and embroidery. A variety of fabrics were used in a crazy quilt, including cotton, wool, ribbon, lace, silk, and velvet. Crazy quilts were all the rage in the late 1800’s. If you’ve been watching The Gilded Age on TV you may have noticed Ada working on a crazy quilt!

VQM’s Community Crazy Quilt is meant to be a project for our community both here in Harrisonburg and across the country. You can participate in many ways!

  • We’ll be working on the project during First Fridays every month throughout 2022. Stop in between 5:00-7:00 pm each month and sew with us.
  • You can make your own “square” and either drop it off or mail it to the museum.
  • “Squares” can be any shape and any size, preferably at least 4 inches in diameter
  • Stop by the museum during our regular open hours after April 1st and pick up a packet to take home to make your own "square". Each packet will include a few pieces of fabric, thread, a needle, and some embroidery floss along with simple directions.
  • If you have a piece of fabric you would like to have included in the quilt you can drop it off or mail it to the museum and we will include it in a "square" for you.
  • This is a great way to honor or memorialize loved ones. Send us a piece of their favorite shirt or print a picture of them onto fabric and we’ll include it in the quilt. All types of fabric are welcome as long as they are clean.

Please mail any items you would like included in the community crazy quilt to:
