Add rug hooking to your handcraft tool box!

Are you interested in learning how to rug hook? Are you feeling inspired after viewing the exhibit Stories are Made Loop by Loop? Join teacher and curator Susan Feller at the Virginia Quilt Museum for a 3 hour workshop and learn the basics of rug hooking. Students will leave the class with a finished project. Materials, hook and frame are included. Students should bring scissors.

Susan will guide students through a project where hooking, applique, and embroidery all come together. This project includes a recycling component, putting seven cans of the same size together into a “circle” as the base, combining designs from upholstery fabric and hooked sections to create a decorative cover. The tuffet is then finished with more fabric. During this class students will be working with cat food sized cans.

This project was made by Blanche and Otha McDonald of Gilmer County West Virginia in the 1960-70’s. Susan has researched their work and chronicled her findings at https://artwools.com/2016/08/06/inspiration-explored-50-years-later/

Supplies included:
Linen stretched on wood frame
Rug Hook
Wool fabric strips
Upholstery fabric samples
Thread and needles
Small cans

Bring scissors please!
