"Star Struck" by Cheryl See

May 21 - August 24, 2013

HEXED will present quilts made from hexagons. Physically the strongest and most efficient geometric shape, hexagons are preferred by national award-winning quilt maker Cheryl See of Ashburn, Va. Her exquisite contemporary quilt "Star Struck" is made with more than 12,000 tiny hexagons specifically cut to show off features in the printed fabrics she used. Cheryl creates her large quilts by hand. Also viewers will see the same technique in historic antique hexagon or "mosaic" quilts never before exhibited.

Also on exhibit will be, VINTAGE REVISITED, featuring 117 small block challenge quilts. Because a woman's work is never done, many quilting projects have been left in various stages of completion. Over a two-year period, 19 talented women (9 from Virginia) were challenged to make new quilts from old unfinished blocks. Each quilter added, cut up, embellished, improved or recreated a finished quilt measuring 24" x 24" with at least one old block. Art quilters, traditionalists, historians and newcomers participated in this quilting journey to add new dimensions to old designs.

“Bethlehem Star” made by Nancy Losee

September 3 - December 14, 2012

Highlighting the 2013 Fall season will be a dazzling exhibit of STAR QUILTS. Inspired by quilts of the 19th century, 25 new quilts were created using new dimensions for old designs. Many museums, historical societies and private collectors gave permission for their quilts to be reproduced by members of the international American Quilt Study Group for this display.  Along side the AQSG's exhibit will be star quilts from the Museum's permanent collection. Come enjoy "stargazing" at the Virginia Quilt Museum.
