Current exhibits:  February 1--May 12, 2012

"Shenandoah Valley Counterpanes" and "Art Under A Microscope"

We open the 2012  season with two diverse and exciting exhibits:  one features historic bedcovers made in the Valley of Virginia, and the second features contemporary fiber art.

Counterpanes are a type of bedcover, often white-work or white fabric with elaborate quilting or stitching on it.  Curated by Beverley and Jeff Evans, the white-work counterpanes in this exhibit were produced in the Shenandoah Valley in the 1800's.  These historic textiles are from private and institutional collections and most have never been publicly displayed.

In contrast, "Art Under A Microscope" is inspired by the beauty of scientific photographs taken through microscopes. This unique collection of 20 art quilts, created by the group Fiber Artists @ Loose Ends, is exhibited for the first time outside of a medical facility.  Colorful and dramatic, these quilts show us the beauty of nature within the human body.
